Background

Roshu Koganei III was born in Asakuga, Tokyo in 1848.

Career

Roshu Koganei III learnt the art of telling stories from Hokkai Koganei (1862) and later took to himself the name of 110-kuba, which became Roshu III after he succeeded to the title (1865). He specialized in relating stories of battles and his favorite themes were of the wars between Kenshin Uesugi and Shingen Takeda and those between Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Katsuie Shibata.

Originally named Shokichi Ueno, he adopted the profession of storytelling at the late age of 40 when he became a pupil of Roshu III and adopted the name Koganei Roshu V.
