In Boston, drawing on wood and attending evening classes Lowell Institute, 1859.
Worked as illustrator and attended Academy of Design, New York, 1860-1861. Enlisted April 16, 1861, 99th New York Volumes.
Promoted Lieutenant and adjunct. 1st federal officer to be shot and taken prisoner (July 19, 1861).
In Southern hospitals and prisons nearly 8 months.
Released on parole.
