Joint author with Richard Lieben (1842-1919) of one of the outstanding early works in mathematical economics. The chief theoretical concern of their Untersuchungen. was partial equilibrium, which they discussed intensively in diagrammatic form, utilising total and marginal curves. In common with Jevons, they incorporated the idea of disutility of labour and they utilised the concept of consumer surplus.
Their discussion of
monopoly is similar to that of Pareto, who along with Edgeworth and Irving Fisher was deeply influenced by their book
Businessman, dealing in sugar, and member of Parliament.
