Background
Sakae Tawara was born in 1858. He was the son of a samurai of the Tsuwano Clan of Iwami (Shimane Prefecture).

Sakae Tawara was born in 1858. He was the son of a samurai of the Tsuwano Clan of Iwami (Shimane Prefecture).
He began his education at an English school at Hiroshima and then attended Tokyo University.
Soon after was teacher of science at Tokyo Semmon College (predecessor of Waseda University) (1882). Appointed dean of the preparatory course of Waseda University (1906).
Gentle and kind by nature, he was very popular among his students.
