He graduated from Kobu Daigaku (former engineering course of Tokyo University) with a degree in engineering.
He was briefly a professor at Kyoto University, till he was entrusted with the construction of the canal from Lake Biwa to Kyoto. He also helped in the development of the railway system in Hokkaido and did the preliminary survey on the tunnel that now connects Moji with Shimonoseki.
