In 1982 - graduated from Andijan Special Vocational School of the Central Statistical Board Under the USSR. 30 October 1987 - graduated from Kharkov Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots named after S. I. Gritsevets with the pilot engineer diploma with a specialization in command tactical fighter aviation. 1 February 1992 - 7 April 1994 – studied by correspondence at the International Center of Training Systems of the State Academy of oil and gas at the faculty of Aerospace Ecology with a specialization in conjugate aerospace environmental materials processing. he was given the qualification of "engineer-ecologist" and the title "master of environmental management".
Since 8 December 1987 - the pilot-instructor of the 716th training aviation regiment of the 5th aviation personnel of the air force training and improvement courses of the Central Asian military district, Tokmak.
11 May 1990 - by decision of SIMC he was selected to the CTC Air Force Cosmonaut Corps (11th recruitment). 8 August 1990 – by Order of RF Ministry of Defense he was enlisted as a test cosmonaut candidate in CTC Cosmonaut Corps. Since 24 April 1992 - was a test cosmonaut of the 2nd group.

Wolcott. J. Edwards, J. Reilly. M. Anderson, B. Dunbar, E. Thomas, and A. Soloviev, P. Vinogradov and D. Wolfe. Flight duration: 8 days 19 hours 46 minutes and 54 seconds.
2nd flight on 14 October 2004 - 25 April 2005 - as the ISS flight engineer and commander of the "Union TMA-5" transport ship, together with Lera Chiao. During the flight he performed two spacewalks of the duration of 9 hours 59 minutes. Flight duration: 192 days 19 hours 01 minutes.
From October 2005 to May 2006 - worked at the Lyndon Johnson Space Center, (United States) as the representative of the Yu. A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. 21 November 2006 - was appointed as a deputy commander of CTC Cosmonaut Corps.

He is married to Nadezhda Mavlyanovna Sharipova. They have one daughter, Nigara Salizhanovna Sharipova, born in 1988 and one son, Zhakhongir Salizhanovich Sharipov, born in 1992.
