Upon graduation from the Aviation Institute, he went to work for Energia, participating in groups working with EVA training, future construction in space, public relations, and ergonomics.
In 1975 - graduated from secondary school No.5 in Donetsk, Rostov region.
In 1975 - 1976 - attended the courses DOSAAF in Donetsk, where he obtained a professional driving license of the 3rd class.
From 27 November 1978 to 30 July 1979 - studied at the MAI preparatory department.
In 1985 - graduated from Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI), faculty "flight vehicles", specialty "two - Medium vehicles", received a diploma of mechanical engineer.
From 30 October 1975 to 18 April 1976 – he worked as a lathe operator’s apprentice at the Donetsk cotton mill.
From 1 September to 30 November 1978 - worked as the mechanic of working supply department of Association "Donetskugol".
From 1 October to 31 December 1982 - worked as a senior laboratory assistant in MAI simultaneously with his full-time studies.
From 1 February to 1 April 1985 - was the sailor of the training ship "Saimaa".
From 10 April 1985 – worked as an engineer of the NPO Energia 292nd division.
25 January 1989 - by decision of the State Interdepartmental Commission (SIMC) he was selected as a candidate for the Cosmonaut Corps of NPO Energia. On 27 February 1989 he was appointed to the post of the test cosmonaut candidate.10th enlistment.
From September 1989 to January 1991 - passed General Space Training (GST) at Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. On 1 February 1991 by decision of the Interdepartmental Qualification Commission (IQC) he was qualified as a test cosmonaut.
In June 1991, he was appointed as a test cosmonaut of the NPO Energia 291st division (cosmonaut corps) .Since April 1991 - received training as a member of the cosmonaut group under the Mir Orbital Complex program, and since 1992 he prepared in a conditional crew together with Anatoly Artsebarsky. 15 October 1992-10 January 1993 - passed training as a flight engineer of the backup crew of the "Soyuz TM-16" spacecraft under the EO-13 program at Mir Orbital Complex, together with Vasily Tsibliev. From 8 February to 24 June 1993 - passed training as a flight engineer of the backup crew of the "Soyuz TM-17" spacecraft under the EC-14 Mir Orbital Complex program, together with Viktor Afanasyev and French-Russian program Altair with Claudie Andre-Dee (France). From 16 August to 17 December 1993 - passed training as a flight engineer of the primary crew of the "Soyuz TM-18" spacecraft under the EO-15 program at the Mir Orbital Complex, together with Viktor Afanasyev and Valeri Polyakov. In April 1995 - in the second crew EO-19 at the Mir Orbital Complex he replaced Alexander Poleshchuk, who had been detached from training for health reasons. From April 14 to June 1995, he was trained as a backup crew flight engineer, together with Yuri Onufrienko. When the expedition started he was a backup on the Atlantis STS-71 Shuttle. From August 1995 to February 1996, he passed training as a flight engineer of the primary crew of the "Soyuz TM-23" spacecraft under the EO-21 program to Mir, jointly with Yuri Onufrienko and NASA-2 program, jointly with Shannon lucid (USA).
In February 1996, he was assigned as a flight engineer of the backup crew under the EO-26 program to Mir, together with Sergey Zaletin, but on 28 July 1997, by decision of the State Interdepartmental Committee he was appointed as a commander of the second expedition prime crew on the ISS (ISS-2). Since August 1997, he passed training as commander of the second expedition on the ISS, together with James Voss and Susan Helms. In February 2000, within this training was assigned as a mission specialist to the Atlantis STS-101 space shuttle crew.
1st flight – 8 January – 9 July 1994 - as a flight engineer of Soyuz TM-18 and Mir Orbital Complex under the EO-15 program (15st principal Expedition). Started together with Viktor Afanasyev and Valery Polyakov. Landed together with Viktor Afanasyev. Flight duration: 182 days 00 hours 27 minutes 01 second.Call sign: Derbent-2.
2nd flight – 21 February – 2 September 1996 - as a flight engineer of Soyuz TM-23 and Mir Orbital Station under the EO-21 (21-th Expedition) program and NASA-2 program together with Yuri Onufrienko and Shannon Lucid (from 24 March). Started together with Yuri Onufrienko. Landed together with Yuri Onufrienko and Claudie André-De (France). During the flight he performed six spacewalks for a total of 30 hours and 30 minutes. Flight duration: 193 days 19 hours 07 minutes 35 seconds. Call Sign: SKIF-2.
3rd flight - 19 – 29 May 2000, as a mission specialist on Atlantis Space Shuttle STS-101 according to the ISS program. Flight duration: 9 days 20 hours 10 minutes 9 seconds.
4th flight - 8 Mart 2001 - 22 August 2001 - as the commander of the 2nd Expedition to ISS (ISS-2), together with James Voss and Susan Helms. Start on the Discovery STS-102 Shuttle, landing on the Discovery STS-105 Shuttle. During the flight he performed one Eva of 39 minutes. Flight duration: 167 days 6 hours 41 minutes 57 seconds.
Married to Vera Sergeevna Usacheva (nee Nazarova) of Kalingrad, Moscow region. They have one daughter, Zhenya.
