Sanetsumu Sanjo was born in 1802.
Sanetsumu was a learned Court noble who was well versed in Court rituals and customs. He was appointed Minister of the Imperial Household (1857) and served Emperors Kokaku, Ninko and Komei.
After foreign warships began to visit Japanese shores, he worked for the cause of restoration of the Imperial regime and expulsion of foreigners. After the Court sent a message to the Mito Clan (1858) urging it to fight off foreign invasion, he was blacklisted by the Shogunate and retired and lived near Kyoto, assuming the Buddhist name of Tanku.
His son, Sanetomi, was a famous statesman of the Meiji Restoration (1868).
