Saneyo Tōin was born in 1308 in Japan.
Saneyo Tōin Conspired with Emperor Godaigo to destroy the power of Ashikaga Shogunate but the plot was abortive and as a result he was arrested during the Genko-no-Ran and the Emperor was exiled to Oki Island.
Later after the Shogun's army was repelled from Kyoto, Saneyo met the Emperor at Harima (1333). But Takauji Ashikaga was soon to rise in revolt at Kamakura and Saneyo led a punitive expedition to quell him (1335). He again confronted and routed the Ashikaga troops at Kyoto together with Akiie I Kitabatake. The following year, however, Ashikaga re-entered Kyoto and Saneyo together with Yoshisada Nitta fled with the Crown Prince to Echizen, from where they proceeded to the Imperial Court at Yoshino (Nara Prefecture) (1336). When Emperor Gomurakami ascended the throne he was appointed a Minister of Left and took part in Court affairs.
