Goodwin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Radcliffe College in 1975. Five years later she earned her Master of Arts degree in Comparative Literature and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1983 from Brown University.
Goodwin began her career as a teaching assistant at Brown University in 1977. Six years later she took a position of an assistant professor at Skidmore College, where she worked until 1990. Also Sarah served as a co-coordinator in women's studies at that college from 1984 to 1986. Then in 1990, Sarah became an associate professor of literature at the same college. Nowadays she is a professor of English at Skidmore College.
Goodwin is a member of Modern Language Association, Northeast Modern Language Association, American Comparative Literature Association and International Comparative Literature Association.
On June 12, 1982 Sarah Goodwin married Robert Edward Goodwin. They have three children.
