Goodwin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Radcliffe College in 1975. Five years later she earned her Master of Arts degree in Comparative Literature and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1983 from Brown University.
Goodwin began her career as a teaching assistant at Brown University in 1977. Six years later she took a position of an assistant professor at Skidmore College, where she worked until 1990. Also Sarah served as a co-coordinator in women's studies at that college from 1984 to 1986. Then in 1990, Sarah became an associate professor of literature at the same college. Nowadays she is a professor of English at Skidmore College.
