In conflict with the Soviet authorities. Left the USSR in 1975 with his Austrian wife. Settled in Canada, later moved to the USA. Became famous after the publication of his first book, Shkola Dlia Durakov (Ardis, USA, 1976), which has since been translated into many languages.
This and the followup, Mezhdu Sobakoi i Volk от, (Ardis, 1979), are both marked by their elegance of style. He is considered to be one of the new talents of modern Russian literature. Lives in Vermont, USA.
