He graduated from Leningrad State University (now Saint Petersburg State University), Faculty of Geology in 1926.
Since 1926 he was a research fellow and the head of Geological Exploration Unit at the Geological Committee (Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg), since 1930 the head of Geological Exploration Unit at the Leningrad Geological Survey, Associate Professor of the Leningrad Railroad Engineering Institute (now St. Petersburg State Transport University) at the same time.
In 1942-1945 Savva Gavrilovich worked at the geological survey "Soyuzalyuminrazvedka" in Siberia. In 1945-1946 conducted research on Tikhvinsky bauxite pool in Leningrad region. Since 1946 became an Associate Professor, professor, head of the General geology Department (since 1950), dean of the faculty of geology (1953-1955) at Voronezh State University.
