Aleksey Kretov was born on August 29, 1952 in Moscow City, Russian Federation. His father was a famous Russian folklorist, literary critic and associate professor, Alexander Ilyich Kretov.

In 1974 Aleksey Kretov graduated from the Faculty of Philology of Voronezh State University.
Aleksey Kretov began his career as an Assistant, but since 1980 he become a Lecturer and since 1991 - Associate Professor in Voronezh State University. For a year he was a Professor of the Department of General Linguistics and Stylistics of Voronezh State University. But then from 1995 till 1998 he was a Professor of the Russian Language Department of Voronezh State University.
Since 1998 Aleksey Aleksandrovich has been the Director of the Scientific and Methodological Center for Computational Linguistics at the Faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology of Voronezh State University and and a Professor of the Department of French Philology. Since 2001 he has been the Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, Romance-Germanic Philology in Voronezh State University.
Moreover Aleksey Aleksandrovich had been lecturing at Helsinki University and Leon University. Since 2001 Aleksey Kretov has been an Editor in chief of the series "Linguistics and Intercultural Communication" magazine "Bulletin of the Voronezh State University". He is the author of more than 250 scientific papers and books.
