Graduated from the Leningrad Art Industrial High School, 1929, and from the Institute of Applied Arts (formerly the VKHUTEIN), 1935. Pupil of V. A. Favorskii.
Entered the Film industry, 1935. First Film - Как Possorilis’ Ivan Ivanovich s Ivanom Nikiforovichem, 1941. War cameraman, 1941-1945.
From 1946-1955, cameraman on many dull Stalinist films. His big success was The Forty First, a film by G. Chukhrai in 1956, followed by M. Kalatozov’s The Cranes Are Flying, 1957, which received international recognition. His next film, Kalatozov’s The Letter That Was Never Sent, became the subject of discussion in the professional press for the next 2 years.
In 1964, worked on I Am Cuba. An extremely gifted man, who was married to his camera. Beg Inokhodtsa, 1970, is only remembered for his dazzling photography.
