1999De Vore, a product of the Chicago suburbs who began writing in grade school, listed naturalist writers Sigurd Olson and Aldo Leopold as among her influences. In an interview with Amazon.com, she expressed the hope that her books will inspire readers to visit new places and learn more about the environment. “That’s how it happened for me,” she added. “I became a journalist, then a birder, then a conservationist, and now an author of books about the environment.”
Sheryl De Vore married her first spouse Karl W. Devore on August 11, 1979. Her second husband is Steve Bailey.
