He graduated from English Literature Department of Kwansei Gakuin College (1921).
After graduation continued studies at his alma mater, being appointed successively as professor of Kwansei Gakuin College (1926), assistant professor (1934) and professor (1937) of Kwansei Gakuin University.
Conducted researches in American literature covering period from mid-19th century to modern times. Devoted himself especially to study of Ralph W. Emerson.
