Education
Shigeno studied at the Third Higher School and Tokyo Semmon Gakko (predecessor of Waseda University) without graduating from either. He was famous as a poet while a student. Received a doctor's degree for his study of Milton's "Paradise Lost" (1932).
Career
Shigeno Tenrai and Tenyu Miki, another poet, published Matsumuski Suzumushi, a collection of their poems in 1897. He later turned to fiction writing.
In 1889 Tenrai went to Hokkaido and was a reporter for the Hakodate Mainichi Shimbun (newspaper) for more than a year. In 1899 Tenrai started teaching English at the Shinshu Middle School in Kyoto and taught subsequently at other middle schools in various places. Shigeno became professor of English poetry at Waseda University. Noted for his erudition, he wrote commentaries on English poetry.
