Shigeoka Uematsu was a disciple of Norinaga Moto-ori.
Shigeoka Uematsu taught at Meirinkan (clan school) besides being private tutor to Motochiyo Tokugawa, the son of the clan lord. He fell foul of the Shōgunate and was ordered to house arrest (1858) and pardoned four years later. A collection of Uematsu's essays was published under the title of Shoin-shu (Collection of Shoin's Works).
