Shigeyasu Suehiro was born on March 15, 1849 in Japan.
He studied at the clan's school and was appointed an instructor at the same (1868). He then went to Kyoto and studied under Sen-an Kasuga.
Returned home and was appointed an official of the prefectural government and then of the Finance Ministry. Became editor-in-chief of the Akebono Shimbun and Choya Shimbun (newspapers) (1875). He was once imprisoned for his anti-government writings.
Together with Tatsui Baba, he promoted the cause of civil rights and participated in the organization of the Liberal Party (Jiyuto). Wrote political novels Setchubai (A Plum Tree in the Snow) and Hanarna-no-Uguisu (A Japanese Nightingale Among the Flowers) which were well received.
Went to Europe and the United States (1888). After returning from abroad, he managed newspapers including Kansai Nippo, Daido Shimbun and Kokkai Shimbun.
He was elected to the House of Representatives when the Diet was established (1890).
His eldest son, Shigeo, and second son, Kyoji, were professors at Tokyo University. Shigeo was a Doctor of Laws and Kyoji a Doctor of Engineering.
