Shigezane Okaya was imprisoned several times for his pro-Imperialist activities. Repaired Imperial mausolea and restored the Ashikaga school, an ancient institution in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture. At the Meiji Restoration (1868), he raised an army in Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture) and Shinano (Nagano Prefecture) provinces and assisted in the Imperial campaign against the Shogunate. Served in the Imperial Government, restored the Kanazawa Library, was appointed a compiler at the Shushikan (History Compilation Institute). In his late years, he engaged in historical research of the Meiji Restoration.
