Shijo Takauta was born on October 17, 1828.
Takauta was among the seven Court nobles who fled to western Japan when oppressed by the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1863. After the Meiji Restoration (1868), he was appointed a Court Councilor. In the restoration war, he distinguished himself as a staff officer of the Imperial forces which fought in Chugoku, Shikoku and northern Japan.
Shijo was appointed a major general in 1869 and commander of the Imperial garrisons in Osaka, Nagoya and Sendai. He was promoted to a lieutenant general and a member of the Senate in 1881. Takauta became a Count, then Marquis.
