Shima served as engineer at Agricultural Experiment Station of Aomori Prefecture and later made official tours of various countries in Europe and America to study apple cultivation. After returning he was appointed assistant professor and later became professor of Hokkaido University and thereafter served as head of Agricultural Department of same university and assumed additional post as director of Hokkaido Agricultural Experiment Station. Shima became noted for his studies on apples and potatoes.
