Shuji Izawa was born in Japan.
Shuji Izawa studied English by himself at Edo (1867) and then Dutch in Kyoto. He was sent on a clan scholarship to Daigaku Nanko (predecessor of Tokyo University) (1870).
After graduation was appointed director of Aichi Prefectural Normal School. Later sent to America to study education system there and attended Harvard University (1875). Returning home was appointed secretary to Ministry of Education (1878). Shuji Izawa took charge of editing elementary school text books and laid the foundation of musical education.
