Shunsui Tamenaga was born in 1790 Tokyo, Japan.
He first ran a lending library and then became a publisher. He was a prolific reader of books, and in order to become a writer he became a disciple of Samba Shikitei. He soon won literary fame with his works, Shunslioku Umegoyomi (Plum Calendar and Color of Spring) and Iroha Library.
