Umeda Shunto was born in 1833 in Ise, Mie Prefecture, Japan.
Shunto Umeda studied Confucianism and Buddhism. Later studied the Japanese classics under Yoshika Mutobe.
Umeda was appointed priest at Enrinji Temple (1848). Later founded Sekishin Gakko (a private school), where more than 1,000 people came to study under him.
