Ekblaw received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1929 and a Master of Arts degree in 1930 from the University of Illinois. He finally obtained his doctor's degree from Clark University in 1934.
Ekblaw was appointed as an assistant calculator for the United States Geological Society in 1927. In 1928 he became an assistant geologist for the Illinois State Geological Society. He served as an editorial assistant for Economic Geography from 1933 to 1934, then joined the faculty of the University of Missouri in 1934, retiring from that institution as a professor of geography in 1970. He also served as a visiting professor at Arizona State University from 1970 to 1973.
In the course of his career, Ekblaw published five books, beginning in 1938 with influence of Geography on Our Economic Life (with D. G. Ridgley), and followed by Problems in Economic Geography (1938, with Ridgley); Economic and Social Geography (1958, with Donald J. D. Mulkeme); Workbook in Economic and Social Geography (1958, with Mulkerne); and his last book Exercises in Earth Science (1967).
