Yamada Sōhen was born in 1624, in Yoshida Mikawa Province (now Aichi Prefecture). His real family name was Nishina. He also had a pseudonym: Nyokanshi.
Yamada first studied under Enshū Kobori and later under Senno-Sōtan to become master of Rikyū school of tea ceremony.
After Sōhen's studies under Enshū Kobori and under Senno-Sōtan, he later served Iki-no-Kami Ogasawara in Edo (1655). Though he was said to have originated his own school of tea ceremony the fact is that he only followed the orthodox style of Senno-Rikyū.
