Nicholls has worked for a number of specialists and general book shops including "Dark They Were, and Golden Eyed" and was the first manager of the London branch of "Forbidden Planet".
Stan Nicholls is the author of more than 20 books, most of them in the fantasy and science fiction genres, including "Strange Invaders", "Fade to Black", "The Nightshade Chronicles" trilogy and "Wordsmiths of Wonder".
He adapted David Gemmell’s "Legend and Wolf in Shadow" into graphic novel form, novelised the TV series "Dark Skies", and co-authored Gerry Anderson’s authorised biography. His "Orcs: First Blood" trilogy - "Bodyguard of Lightning", "Legion of Thunde" and "Warriors of the Tempest" - is published by Gollancz; and his associated story "The Taking" was shortlisted for the 2001 British Fantasy Award. His work has been published inmore than 20 countries, including Argentina, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Spain and the US. Quicksilver Rising, the first volume in a new fantasy sequence, was published by HarperCollins/Voyager in August 2003. Volume two, Quicksilver Zenith, appears in June 2004.
Before taking up writing full-time in 1981, he co-owned and managed West London bookstore Bookends, managed specialist sf bookshop" Dark They Were and Golden Eyed", and was the first manager of "Forbidden Planet".
A journalist for national and specialist publications, and the Internet, he was for six years Time Out’s and fantasy book reviewer, and now reviews popular science titles for the magazine.
