Carleton began his career as a professor of history at California Baptist College (nowadays California Baptist University) in 1967. Four years later he took a position of a dean at the same college. Since 1977 Stephen has been an executive vice president at California Baptist College.
On August 14, 1959 Stephen Carleton married Ellen Louise Broyles. They have two children.
