Gelman began his career as a managing editor of Sport Magazine in 1958. Eight years later he took a postion of an associate editor and senior editor of Life Magazine. Then in 1973, Stephen became a founding editor of New Times Magazine. A year later he was appointed a consultant editor of New West Magazine, Television Guide, Viking Press, where he worked until 1986.
In 1988, he held a position of a consultant editor at Time Inc. In 1999, Gelman became a senior executive editor of George Magazine. Two years later he was appointed a consultant editor of Reader's Digest, where he served until 2010.
On December 11, 1960 Stephen Gelman married Rita Golden, with whom he divorced in July 1986. They have 2 children. On October 7, 1995 he married Deborah Watson Mason.
