Stephen R. Kandall was born on January 8, 1940, in New York, United States.
Kandall graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree (magna cum laude) in 1961. He then obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree at New York University at 1965.
Kandall started his career as an intern at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in 1965. The next year, he became an assistant resident, then a senior resident and in 1968, a chief resident in paediatrics. The same year, Kandall was appointed as an assistant instructor at the medical college and in 1972, he became an assistant professor and attending physician. Four years later, he went to Mount Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York, where he started working as an assistant professor, then as an associate professor and assistant attending physician and since 1986, as a professor of paediatrics and attending physician.
Since 1994, Kandall holds the position of former chief of neonatology at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, and professor of paediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.
During his career, Kandall was a visiting professor and a guest lecturer at colleges, universities, and teaching hospitals in the United States and abroad as well as a consultant and guest on radio and television programs.
Stephen Kandall is best known as a neonatologist and paediatrician, who testified as an expert the case of Jennifer Johnson, who was convicted of delivering a controlled substance to a minor. That the minor happened to be Johnson’s unborn child made her case all the more complex, controversial, and ultimately, historical.
Kandall is the author of two books, Substance and Shadow: Women and Addiction in the United States and Women, Children, and Addiction. He holds fellowships from Giannini Foundation, Bank of America, and National Institutes of Health. He was also named a Preceptor of the Year by the New York City Health Research Training program in 1990 and was cited among Best Doctors in New York by New York magazine in 1996.
