Stephen Leon White was born on May 4, 1938 in Jacksonville, Florida, United States.
Stephen White received a Bachelor of Arts in History from San Francisco State College (now San Francisco State University) (1962) and a Master of Fine Arts in Film from the University of California at Los Angeles (1968).
After working in the corrections field for the better part of eight years, Stephen White opened his own photography gallery in 1975. He also made documentaries and did news reporting for King TV in Seattle, Washington (1969-1970), and taught photographic history at Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa, California, in 1976. In 1980 Stephen White became president of the Association of International Photography and Art Dealers. He also made Film Geel for Swedish Television.
