Stephen T. "Steve" Jurvetson is an American entrepreneur, venture capitalist and a board member of SpaceX and Tesla. He is a former partner of the firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson and an early investor in Hotmail, Memphis Meats, Mythic and Nervana.
Background
Jurvetson was born in Arizona, United States, on March 1, 1967. His father Tõnu Jürvetson was an Estonian immigrant who fled to the United States through Germany just before Soviet re-occupation in 1944. Jurvetson's father was married to another immigrant from Estonia, Tiiu Tia Jürvetson. Even though within the family, the Estonian language was actively used, Steve Jurvetson never learned it, so his parents used it as a secret language between themselves.
Education
Jurvetson graduated from St. Mark's School of Texas in 1985. He finished his degree in electrical engineering at Stanford University in 2.5 years and graduated No. 1 in his class. Jurvetson then received a Master of Science in electrical engineering and Master of Business Administration, also from Stanford University.
Steve Jurvetson's first job out of Stanford was working as an R&D engineer at Hewlett-Packard (HP). After two years, he moved on as a consultant at Bain & Company, and then a product marketer at Apple and NeXT Software. From February 1996 till December 1997 he was a Board Member at Hotmail.
Jurvetson first joined Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ) after his second year of business school. In 1995 he became an official partner and managing director after proving his talent on several investments.
He was a board member of NeoPhotonics (1996-2011), Synthetic Genomics (2005-2017), D-Wave Systems Inc. (2003-present), SpaceX (2009-present), and Tesla Motors (2006-present). He also led the firm's investments in Tradex and Cyras (acquired by Ariba and Ciena, respectively). In 2016, President Barack Obama appointed Steve Jurvetson as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship.
On November 13, 2017, Jurvetson left DFJ Venture Capital as well as SpaceX and Tesla following an internal DFJ investigation into rumours of sexual harassment. The findings of this investigation were not made public. However, anonymous sources alleged that the investigation "uncovered behaviours by Jurvetson that were unacceptable related to a negative tone toward women entrepreneurs." Steve Jurvetson claimed that his stepping down from his role was not connected with the allegations. He tweeted, "I am leaving DFJ to focus on personal matters."
Jurvetson became a co-founder and managing director of a new venture fund, Future Ventures, in November 2018. The inaugural $200M venture capital fund focuses on environmentally sustainable transportation, food technology and high power computer systems.
Steve Jurvetson is one of the most successful businessmen and venture investors of today. He was named to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology TR35 (Innovators Under 35) in 1999 for "recognize young entrepreneurs who can deliver", including making the first investment in Hotmail.
Deloitte named Jurvetson "Venture Capitalist of the Year" in 2012. Steve Jurvetson was named to Forbes' "Midas List" of Tech's Top Investors in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016.
Jurvetson was the world's first Tesla Model South owner and the second Tesla Model X owner (VIN 2), following Elon Musk. Besides, Steve Jurvetson was the first non-European to become an e-resident of Estonia.
