Action Anthropology and Sol Tax are both important chapters in the development of contemporary anthropology and applied social science. Freeman was born on May 24, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois, United States; the daughter of Sol and Gertrude Tax.
Freeman received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Chicago in 1958. A year later she earned his Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1965 from Harvard University.
Freeman began his career as an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois in 1965. Five years later she took a position of an associate professor and professor in 1978 at the same university. Also Susan worked as a chairman at the University of Illinois from 1979 to 1982.
Since 1992 she was a research associate of the department of sociology and anthropology at Montana State University. In addition, in 1998, Freeman was appointed an instructor at Radcliffe College on Seminars on Food in History and Culture. Since 1999 she has been a professor emeritus at the University of Illinois.

2012Freeman is a member of American Anthropological Association, the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, Society for Anthropology of Europe, Society of Spanish and Portuguese History Studies, Council for European Studies and International Institute in Spain.
On March 20, 1964 Susan Freeman married Leslie G. Freeman. They have a daughter.
