In her early years, Susan attended Tara Anglican School for Girls. Later, Susan studied at the University of New South Wales, where she received a degree in Clinical Psychology. She also attended Rikkyo University (also known as Saint Paul's University) in Tokyo, Japan, graduating with a degree in Communication and Media Studies.
In 1979, Susan began working as an associate editor for periodical, titled POL, the post she held till 1981, when she moved to Signpost as an editor and remained there till 1982. Between 1983 and 1987, Kurosawa served as an associate editor at Playboy magazine.
In 1988-1990, Susan held the post of an editor at the publication, titled Signature. During the period from 1990 till 1992, she acted as a freelance writer. Since 1992, Kurosawa has been serving as a travel columnist and associate editor at The Australian newspaper.
In addition, Susan volunteered at Aust Care Environmental Services for Burma and Eritrea refugee projects, working as refugee advocacy ambassador.
