Susan Purcell was born on June 26, 1942, in New York City, New York, United States. She is a daughter of David and Ilene Kaufman.
Susan Purcell studied at Barnard College where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963. She also attended Columbia University and received a Master of Arts degree in 1965 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Latin American politics in 1969.
Susan Purcell started her career as a Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1969. She left this post in 1979. From 1980 to 1981 she worked at the U.S. Department of State as a member of Policy Planning Staff. In 1981, Purcell started to work as a senior fellow and director of Latin America Project at Council on Foreign Relations. She held this post until 1988 and in 1989 became Vice President at Americas Society. In 2005, she left Americas Society and became Director of the Center for Hemispheric Policy at the University of Miami and worked there until 2015. Susan Purcell is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Valero Energy Corporation, a Fortune 100 company based in San Antonio, Texas.
Susan Purcell published her first book Europe and Latin America in the World Economy in 1994. Later she published such books as Brazil under Cardoso and Mexico under Zedillo. Her latest book Cuba: The Contours of Change was published in 2000. She writes a column for America Economia magazine and regularly comments on development in Latin America on radio and television programs in the United States, Latin America and Europe.
Susan Purcell is a member of the Advisory Council of The Mexico Institute of the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C., as well as a former Fellow of the Woodrow Wilson Center.
Susan Purcell was married to John Purcell. The marriage produced a daughter.
