In a study encompassing American history from the colonial period to the 1970s, Dr. Susan Estabrook Kennedy (1942-2003) examines the protean identity of white working-class women, their often courageous struggles for recognition and survival, and their interactions with other elements of American society. The book vividly portrays the effects of industrialization on American women, especially the poor; problems unique to immigrant women in the 19th and 20th centuries; and the impact of two world wars and a depression on employment patterns. Kennedy ends by assessing the way the feminist movement has been viewed by working-class women. Part of the Minorities in Modern America Series from Indiana University Press. Kennedy served as administrative associate to the president of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), associate and interim dean of the College, and as acting vice provost for academic affairs. Known by many as a "woman of firsts," Kennedy published the first book produced by a member of the history department, and was the first to chair the department. She also was the first woman promoted to associate and full professor of history and was VCU's first recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.
