After the death of her husband, Robert Schumann, Clara continued her brilliant career and supported their eight children. Clara Schumann's extraordinary story is supplemented with her letters and diary entries, some of which have never before been published in English. Gorgeous portraits and photographs show the members of Clara's famous musical community and Clara herself from age eight to seventy-six. Index, chronology.

(José was a boy with a song in his heart and a dance in hi...)
José was a boy with a song in his heart and a dance in his step. Born in Mexico in 1908, he came into the world kicking like a steer, and grew up to love to draw, play the piano, and dream. José's dreaming took him to faraway places. He dreamed of bullfighters and the sounds of the cancan dancers that he saw with his father. Dance lit a fire in José's soul.

(George Catlin is one of America’s best-known painters, fa...)
George Catlin is one of America’s best-known painters, famous for his iconic portraits of Native Americans. He spent much of his life in the wilderness, sketching and painting as he traveled. A solo trek across 500 miles of uncharted prairie, an expedition to the Andes, harrowing encounters with grizzly bears and panthers, and tours of the royal palaces of Europe were among his many adventures. In an era when territorial expansion resulted in the near annihilation of many indigenous cultures, George Catlin dedicated himself to meeting and writing about the native peoples of the western hemisphere. With his “Indian Gallery” of paintings and artifacts, he toured the United States and Europe, stirring up controversy and creating a sensation.

dancer publicist teacher author
Susanna Reich was born on April 10, 1954, in New York, to Haskell A. Reich, a physician, and Nancy B. Reich, a musicologist.
From 1971 to 1973, Reich attended Bennington College. In 1976, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University. She also studied dance at American Ballet Theatre School and Royal Academy of Dancing, London and attended the University of Hawaii.
Susanna Reich has driven big trucks, designed flowers in honor of the Emperor and Empress of Japan, and done graduate work in ancient Hawaiian hula. She has also written articles on dance and floral design for national magazines and scholarly journals. Susanna's first book, Clara Schumann: Piano Virtuoso (Clarion, 1999), won an Orbis Pictus Honor from the National Council of Teachers of English, and was an ALA Notable and Best Book for Young Adults, and a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year, among other honors.
Then, Susanna returned to her first love - dance - to pen Jose! Born to Dance: The Story of José Limón, a picture book biography for kids ages 5-9, illustrated by Raúl Colón (Paula Wiseman Books/Simon & Schuster, 2005).
She has since turned her hand to fiction. In the historical novel Penelope Bailey Takes the Stage (Marshall Cavendish, 2006), a girl who longs to be an actress is thwarted by her family's rigid Victorian ideas about appropriate behavior for young ladies. Penelope is inspired to follow her dream by Isabelle Grey, a character based on the famous dancer Isadora Duncan. The book was named one of the Best Books of the Year by Scripps-Howard News Service and nominated for YALSA's Teens Top Ten. In 2008, Susanna returned to writing for older kids with Painting the Wild Frontier: The Art and Adventures of George Catlin (Clarion, 2008). This biography of the 19th century artist-adventurer received three starred reviews and was named a Booklist Top Ten Arts Book for Youth and a Kirkus Reviews' Best Book for Young Adults.
Susanna's picture book, Minette's Feast: A Delicious Story of Julia Child and Her Cat (Abrams, 2012), is about the bestselling chef's first cat, a Parisian who lapped up Child's leftovers but preferred mice. The book received starred reviews in School Library Journal, Kirkus, Booklist, and Shelf Awareness and was on the best-books-of-the-year list, CCBC Choices. In 2015 Susanna had two new books published, Fab Four Friends: The Boys Who Became the Beatles (Christy Ottaviano Books/Henry Holt), a picture book about the early years of the bestselling band in history; and Grace and Sylvie: A Recipe for Family (American Girl), an e-book novella in the Girl of the Year series, told from the point of view of Grace Thomas' French cousin, Sylvie. 2017 saw the publication of Susanna's picture book biography Stand Up and Sing! Pete Seeger, Folk Music, and the Path to Justice (Bloomsbury), a Junior Library Guild Selection.
Susanna worked for ten years as a floral designer and owner of Flowers by Susanna. During that time she designed flowers for Julia Child's 80th birthday party, a dinner in honor of five Prime Ministers, and many other exciting events.
An award-winning author of fiction and nonfiction for children and young adults, Susanna Reich has driven big trucks, designed flowers in honor of the Emperor and Empress of Japan, and done graduate work in ancient Hawaiian hula. Her honors include the Rip Van Winkle Award for Outstanding Contributions to Children's Literature, Tomas Rivera Mexican American Children's Book Award, Int'l Latino Book Award, NCTE Orbis Pictus Honor, ALA Notable & Best Books for Young Adults, School Library Journal Best Books, Kirkus Best Young Adult Books, and Booklist Top Ten Arts Books for Youth.

2005Susanna believes that dance, floral design, and writing have much in common. The principles of all art forms are the same. If creative in one art form, it is possible to use that creativity in other art forms. The same principles of balance and structure, form, and composition apply, and she uses the discipline she learned as a dancer every day.
One has to see with the eyes of a child, to capture a child’s sense of discovery, with its wonders, terrors, and excitement, then to find the right word, the perfect sentence structure, the simplest way to express complex thoughts. Susanna is interested in writing biographies about artists of all kinds. She is especially drawn to exploring the relationship between an artist’s life and his or her creative work.
Reich was a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and Authors Guild.
Susanna Reich's passion from an early age was ballet, which she began to study at the age of seven. After stints at the American Ballet Theatre School and the Royal Academy of Dancing in London, England, her focus shifted to modern dance.
On May 26, 1980, Reich married Gary Golio, an artist and social worker. She has a daughter, Laurel Alexandra.
