Sylvia McNicoll was born on September 30, 1954, in Ajax, Ontario and grew up in Montreal, Quebec. She is the daughter of Ernst and Gertrude (John) Ehret.
McNicoll received her bachelor's degree in English with a minor in Economics from Concordia University in 1976.
McNicoll started her career as a senior cash management clerk at Canadian International Paper Company in 1973. McNicoll then also worked as features editor for Today's Parent Toronto for eight years while she was writing her novels for young people. She also served as Artist in Residence for numerous schools in Ontario and Writer in Electronic Residence for schools across Canada.
Now, besides writing books that get published in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Australia, Canada and the US, she visits classrooms and libraries to teach and motivate writers, whatever their age is.
McNicoll's junior novels about home and school life feature effective pacing, authenticity, and humor, claim critics, while her novels for older readers tend to be sensitive and compassionate treatments of issues relevant to contemporary teens.
