Tadanobu no Fujiwara was born in 1187. The son of Nobukiyo, Dainagon (Vice-Minister).

He was appointed Gon Dainagon (Secretary under a Vice-Minister). His three sisters became Court ladies each favored by ex-Emperor Gotoba, Emperor Toba and Shogun Sanetomo Minamoto. He therefore wielded great power not only in the Court but also over warriors. During the war of the Jokyu Era (1221), he defended Kyoto along the Uji River against Shogunate forces but was defeated, captured and was sent to Kamakura Pardonea through the intercession of Shogun Sanetomo's wife, who was his sister.
