Tadazane no Fujiwara was born 1078. The son of Kampaku (Emperor's Adviser) Moromichi.
During the reign of Emperor Horikawa, he was appointed Kampaku. Became Sessho (Regent) to Emperor Toba. He became a priest in 1112, after he was rebuked by ex-Emperor Shirakawa in connection with his daughter’s becoming a Court Lady. He retired to Uji and assumed the Buddhist name of Enri. Later, however, when ex-Emperor Toba wielded power, he extended his prestige because of his being the father of Yasuko, the consort of the ex-emperor. His two sons, Tadamichi and Yorinaga competed for power and Tadazane favored Yorinaga. He successfully maneuvered to make Yorinaga's adopted daughter the consort of Emperor Konoe and to oust Tadamichi from the position of Lji-no-Choja (head of the Fujiwara family). This was one of the causes of the Hogen civil war in 1156.
