In 1956, Tai-Sung received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University. Later, he continued his education at Yale University, graduating with a Master of Arts degree in 1957. Then, in 1963, An attained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
During the Korean War, An served as an interpreter for the United States government group, called the Joint Advisory Commission. In 1954, he left for the United States and served as an interpreter for the State Department during the period from 1958 to 1960.
In 1963, Tai-Sung began working as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Washington College in Chestertown, a post he held till 1973. In 1968, he helped to establish the college's Political Science and International Studies Department and served as its first chairman. In 1973, An was appointed an Everett E. Nuttie Professor of Political Science at the same college, a post he held until his retirement in May 1998.
Tai-Sung An, who was a Professor of Political Science and International Relations, gained prominence for his particular expertise in the political life of China, North Korea and Vietnam. Also, he was known for his work on Asian communism and the Vietnam War.
An received several awards, including a Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching and Sears Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award.
Tai-Sung was a member of the American Political Science Association, Association for Asian Studies, Asia Society, Korean Association of Oriental History and Civilization and American Association of University Professors.
Tai-Sung married Sihn Ja Lee, an artist, on August 23, 1969. Their marriage produced two daughters - Jenny An and Grace An.
