Returned from China (718) and was granted the Senior Fourth Court Rank and appointed Lord of Musashi, then Sagami, Shimotsuke and Kozuke provinces. After the Ezo tribe assas senator Hirono Kamitsuku, the Court's governor, in northern Japan (720), he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Imperial punitive forces sent against the tribe. After subduing the Ezos he was appointed a Court Councilor (731) and then military governor of the Sanyo District (the southern part of Chugoku along the Inland Sea).
