Iemasa Hashisuka was born in 1558 in Hachisuka Village in Owari (Aichi Prefecture). He was an eldest son of Masakatsu.

After serving Nobunaga Oda, he distinguished himself in the battle of Nagashino (in Aichi Prefecture) in which he fought under Hideyoshi Toyotomi. After the Honnoji Incident in 1582 in which Nobunaga was assassinated by one of his captains, Mitsuhide Akechi, he defeated Mitsuhide. He then fought with distinction in the battle at Shizugatake and in a campaign against rebels in Saiga in Kii Province (Wakayama Prefecture). In 1585, he was made Lord of Awa (Tokushima Prefecture), with a fief of 173,000 koku and lived in Tokushima Castle. He subsequently fought in the battles in Kyushu and Odawara. In the Korean expedition of Hideyoshi, he saved Yukinaga Asano, who had been besieged at Wulsan in 1597 and routed the Korean forces. In the Sekigahara Battle in 1600, he refused the invitation of Mitsunari Ishida, a warlord of the Toyotomi Camp, and sided with Ieyasu Tokugawa.
