Was a clever military strategist and was appointed chief of the cavalry. Distinguished himself during the Hogen War (1156) by seizing Emperor Sutoku Shirakawa Hall, which his brother Tametomo was defending. Later due to a quarrel with Michinori Fujiwara he and Nobuyori Fujiwara rose in revolt but were defeated, and while seeking refuge with Tadamune Osada in Owari Province (Aichi Prefecture) was killed by him. This is known as the Heiji War.
