Takenosuke Sano was born in 1839.
Takenosuke Sano was a favorite with Lord Nariaki Tokugawa when he was a page. When the Shogunate planned to place Nariaki under house arrest (1858), he and other retainers protested to the Shogunate and were punished. He was in the band of Mito retainers who assassinated Naosuke Ii, the Shogunate Prime Minister, in front of the Sakurada Gate of Edo Castle. In the incident, Takenosuke was seriously wounded but managed to proceed to the residence of a roju, or Shogunate Minister, and present a letter explaining the motives of the assassination before he died.
