Background
Tamenaga no-Sugawara was born in 1158. He was the son of Nagamori, Daigaku-no-Kami (Head of the Court College).

Tamenaga no-Sugawara was appointed Monjo Hakase (Doctor of Letters), lecturer of the Emperor and Court Councilor and served concurrently as Chief of Kageyushi (a high official supervising personnel affairs).
