Tanehira Unagami was born in 1829 in Shimo-osa, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
After learning fencing from Shusaku Chiba toured the provinces as a fencing master till he came to Wakayama where he settled to study waka poetry under Morohei Kano.
Tanehira Unagami was very interested in waka poetry. He modeled his poems after those of Mabuchi Kamo. Valued the Manyō style and bitterly criticized the poems of Keien school founded by Kageki Kagawa.
