Tanzan was a disciple of Tanyu Kono under the name Tansen.
Tanzan Tsuruzawa was one of the artists who decorated the Kyoto Palace during the Genroku Era (1688-1703). Records state that he had greater influence in art circles at Kyoto than his master.
