Taro Gomi was born on August 20, 1945, in Chofu, Tokyo, Japan. He is the son of Tatsuo Gomi, a comparative linguist, and Fusako (Ohtaguro) Gomi.
Gomi attended the Kuwazawa Design School for two years from 1964.
Gomi works as a writer and illustrator of children’s books. He supervised design and coordinated production of Kidd’s Station clothing and other articles. He has published more than 400 books in Japan, for readers of all ages. He also made songs for many children's shows.
Gomi is internationally known, and his picture books have won prestigious awards from such countries as Italy and the former Republic of East Germany, as well as Japan. He received the Sankei Award for Children’s Books in 1978. Three years later he earned the Graphic Prize “Fiera di Bologna” for Children. He was awarded the Copper Medal for Well-Designed Children’s Book.

Gomi married Yumi Morimoto in October 1968. They have 2 daughters - Yo and Mai.
